In today's edition:

  • 1 Story - My 775 day burnout battle (a story of dopamine vs passion)

  • 2 Expert resources - Podcast on a Page, Creating an AI finance Analyst

  • 3 Tech tools - AI legal assistant, Data trained bots, Tailored book recommendations

Important Update!

From next week this newsletter will be changing.

As you'll see from the story below, I've faced a bit of a struggle recently, so it's time to scale back.

You'll still receive a Friday newsletter (it just might not be every Friday) and it'll still take 5 mins or less to read.

It won't follow the usual 1-2-3 format, but it will still include a tonne of great content.

I thank you in advance for continuing to subscribe to Tech for Finance.

1/ Story

My 775 day burnout battle (a story of dopamine vs passion)

It’s been just over 26 months since my first subscriber.

Seeing the notification was an amazing feeling…

“Somebody likes what I have to say” - yay!

I’ve always craved recognition.

And this was exactly that.

- 6 months later, I’m starting a podcast

- 1 month after, I’ve 10,000 followers

- 6 months after that, 1st viral post

More numbers, more dopamine.

But at the same time:

- I’m sleeping less

- I’m skipping meals

- I’m constantly staring at screens

Which all bottom out dopamine.

But I can’t stop, so I compensate.

- More caffeine

- More ‘bio-hacks’

- More supplements

Even greater highs.

And even lower lows.

Then:

- I start writing guides

- I launch a newsletter

- I start guesting

Which I love to begin with.

But then they start becoming hollow.

- My work starts suffering

- My body starts aching

- My family suffer too

I lose track of why I started.

And I replace passion with ‘doing more stuff’.

Enough is enough.

From now on I will do less ‘stuff’.

But more of the things I’m passionate about.

My advice to others.

Don’t confuse dopamine with passion and drive.

Find the passion that drives you, and the dopamine will sort itself.
