TFF #017 - 20 Finance Experts Share Their Fave Tech Tools

Hello, and welcome to a another edition of the Tech for Finance Newsletter, where we’re extracting the goodies from the last 20 podcasts.

At the end of every podcast, I ask, “What app or gadget could you not live without”. Here are the responses, with a couple of bonus apps thrown in:

1/ There are Bots for That - with Dan Lawrence

Dan owns the company “Bots for That”, and he can’t live without Audible, that he listens to on his walk into work every day. His favourite audiobook is ‘Windswept and Interesting’ by Bill Connolly.

Simon owns Hopton Analytics, and loves a good tech tool. He uses Motion which is an AI tool that organises his tasks and calendar for him.

Tom is a former partner enablement manager at Sage, and uses Outlook religiously. Any actionable e-mails go straight into his calendar.

Paul is Founder at the FP&A Guy, also know as ‘The Tools Guy’. Paul does all of his own graphics in Canva, so he chose that as his favourite app (along with Excel of course)

6/ How visual effects are simplifying financial modelling - with Jon Cowley

Jon runs whatifi, a financial modelling platform. Like many smart people - like me ;) - He’s using Notion (Sponsored) to organise his notepad and tasks, and Loom to record his videos and demos.

Howard is Finance Director at The Economist, and also provides eLearning and coaching for finance soft skills. Howard’s a bit of a technophobe, but is a fan of Slack, and has recently started using Trello.

9/ Why your problem isn’t your tools - with Nicolas Boucher

Nicolas is THE finance influencer on LinkedIn right now with 400k+ followers, he provides training to those looking to become more advanced at FP&A and has recently launched a guide on ChatGPT for Finance. Nicolas can’t live without his smartphone, he can run his business from anywhere.

10/ How to build a future focused finance foundation + ChatGPT - with Chris Ortega

Chris runs Fresh FP&A and is a Fractional ‘fresh’ CFO. Chris also uses Canva for his branding, but also LOVES ChatGPT.

[TIP - Even if you don’t run your own business or post on social media, you can use Canva templates to spice up your presentations, and create images from templates]

Kevin is the COO for GrowCFO and also runs the GrowCFO podcast. Like me he likes his productivity apps, but is also a big fan of Jasper which gives him inspiration for new content ideas using AI

Angel runs Jump Up Global who help finance pros level up their careers. Angel’s favourite phone app is CapCut which she uses for her social videos.

14/ How to lead a successful finance transformation project - with Dante Healy

Dante is a finance transformation consultant, and also runs his own podcast. Dante uses a Kanban productivity tool called Blue to manage his tasks, and Rize, which is an AI powered time tracking app to help him understand where he’s spending his time.

15/ Creating a junior accountant using AI - with Chris Bell

Chris is Co-Founder at Luka, and has built ChatGPT into Xero. Chris is a big fan of Reddit. Especially the ChatGPT sub-reddit group.

16/ Avoiding Frankenstein FP&A with FlowCog + ChatGPT - with Adam Tzagournis

Adam has built and runs FlowCog, a financial modelling platform specifically for Saas companies. Adam also uses Trello, is a massive fan of GitHub Copilot and gave a shoutout to NixSheets during the show.

17/ Moving finance from mindless to mindful work + ChatGPT-4 - with Glenn Hopper

Glenn is a AI in finance all-star, and is a thought leader in the AI finance transformation space. Glenn’s into fitness and loves tracking his data through his Garmin. I’m also looking forward to the release of his epic Sci-fi novel.

Christian is the finance automation manager at Kraft Heinz and is pushing boundaries with ChatGPT and Python. He’s also a machine learning pro to boot. As well as ChatGPT, Christian loves Tableau for BI and Data Analytics.

19/ Why AI can’t replace human gut-feel and experience - with Chris Reilly

Chris is the Founder of Mission Capital Consulting and an Excel pro. He runs is own business and is great at developing financial models. Chris is a big fan of iMessage groups that he uses to run his family life and also uses Linktree as a single link to all of his websites and content.

20/ Building a virtual CFO with AI - with John Ladaga

John is Co-Founder of Sturppy who make is easy for small / startup businesses to create financial models. John is a MASSIVE fan of Loom, and he also loves an old school app called Licecap to produce GIFs.

[TIP - You don’t just have to use Loom in a customer facing role, it’s great to share quick videos with your team instead of long e-mails or meetings too]
