TFF #013 - How to Use AI to Generate 90% of Your Presentation

Hello, and welcome to the latest edition of the Tech for Finance newsletter where we'll be looking at how you can use AI tools to generate 90% of your presentation.
The tools we'll be using are:
Chat GPT (3.5 of 4) - https://chat.openai.com/chat
Gamma - https://gamma.app
Midjourney - https://www.midjourney.com/
[NOTE - This approach is not necessarily one that I'd recommend if you're looking to share lots of charts and statistics, as you may find yourself copying and pasting quite a lot. BUT, if you are using PowerBI Pro, or any other tool that gives you the ability to share dashboards via a link, you can embed them into Gamma as a web URL]
The process we will be taking is:
Using ChatGPT to create a presentation outline
Using Gamma to turn that presentation outline into presentation slides
Using midjourney to create AI images
The scenario we’re imagining is giving a presentation on financial risks to our company.
1/ Creating a presentation outline:
I used ChatGPT 4 for this, as it tends to be more precise when responding to your prompts. But you can use the free version of ChatGPT (3.5) to achieve the same ends, you may just need to tweak it’s response a bit more.
Here’s the prompt:
“Act as CFO that's tasked with presenting financial risks to your business.
You work in the professional service industry, and you operate in the UK which is mid-recession.
As much as the majority of your business is conducted in the UK, you also have a number of smaller operations overseas.
Your biggest expense is employee salaries.
You have 200 employees.
You do a low number of small, high value projects.
You have 4 main competitors, that are larger, but not as skilled.
Please produce the outline of a presentation, including slide headings, and the bullet points to be covered within each slide.
Your response must be 1000 characters”
[NOTE - I’ve specified 1000 characters, as this is the limit of the detail you can enter in Gamma]
Here’s the response:

UK recession
Industry impact
Global economic effects

2/ Creating the presentation slides using Gamma
Login to gamma.app. Gamma is still in BETA right now, so it’s free for the time being…
Click on the ‘New with AI’ option.
Enter your presentation theme.
It will then provide it’s own recommendations for the outline.
But in this case we’re copying the outline we generated from ChatGPT.
Once it’s generated the presentation, you an then change the layout of the slides, edit the text and switch out the images.
You can use pre-set themes, but you can also create your own themes too.
[Note - ALWAYS check AI generated text for accuracy. The complexity of your topic will dictate how much of your presentation the AI will be able to produce on it’s own. I’ve used 90% as the number in this newsletter, but if you have a more complex presentation that requires more edits, it might only be 50-60%…]
3/ Using Midjourney to Create AI images
Midjourney is a generative AI image tool.
This step is optional, as you can very quickly get lost down the rabbit hole of generative imagery (I’ve lost hours to this as it becomes completely addictive - so proceed with caution)
Midjourney also isn’t the easiest of tools to setup and start using as:
a) You’ve got to setup a Discord account and use the tool via Dicord (which is a chat platform similar to Teams / Slack - It was originally developed for gamers)
b) You’ve got to learn how to create image prompts in the same way you’d learn how to use ChatGPT prompts, but they’re more difficult to master. Getting consistently themed images is tricky indeed.
Either way, if you’re interested, here’s the image + prompt I used to create the image in the first slide:

TL;DR
Use a detailed ChatGPT prompt to generate a presentation outline
Use Gamma to create the presentation slides and the initial wording
Edit the wording and the slides ensuring it’s on-brand and accurate
Use Midjourney to create some cool images (optional)
